Full Curriculum
15 Modules Across 3 Days
#1 · Introduction to Advanced HVAC
Familiarisation with the software interface, relevant terminology, and a guided tour of key input parameter areas for detailed HVAC modelling in IES VE.
#2 · HVAC Loops
Design models for air and water distribution systems — mechanical ventilation, piped hot/chilled water and condenser water distribution systems.
#3 · HVAC Zones and Groups
HVAC zoning for temperature and airflow control. How zone groups simplify system layouts by grouping zones with similar equipment configurations.
#4 · Component Hierarchy & Navigation
Navigate the hierarchy of HVAC components and understand their relationships using the HVAC Component Navigator in the building energy modelling software.
#5 · System Control — Setpoint Managers
How setpoint managers optimise energy efficiency and control temperature and humidity by specifying supply sub-loop outlet temperatures.
#6 · Templates, Loops & Zone Groups
Design and control HVAC systems at multiple levels — system, sub-loop, zone group and zone — using templates for efficient configuration.
#7 · Sub-loop Level Control
Edit boilers, chillers, cooling towers, water heaters, pumps, coils, humidifiers, setpoint managers, mixers, splitters, AHUs and component connections.
#8 · Zone Group Level Control
Control temperature, humidity and zone sizing for cooling, heating and outdoor airflow rates — design airflow calculation and flow rate limits.
#9 · HVAC Zone Level Control
Detailed components — air and water distribution, zone grouping, setpoint managers — working across system, sub-loop, zone group, zone and component levels.
#10 · Auto-sizing HVAC Components
Using the EnergyPlus engine to create and modify zones, control temperature and airflow, use schedules and sizing factors, and autosize components.
#11 · Auto-sizing & User Defined Inputs
Combining auto-sized and user-specified inputs effectively. Independent component auto-sizing alongside HVAC zone and air loop data.
#12 · Humidity Control
Manually define humidity control for Detailed HVAC systems in cases where the standard HVAC template proves insufficient.
#13 · HVAC Components Deep-Dive
Detailed editing and operation of each HVAC component manually — inputting accurate specifications true to actual system components in use.
#14 · Practical Application & Testing
Guided independent session for students to test custom HVAC system building, resolve doubts, and practise in a supported live environment.
#15 · Error Resolution & Bug Fixing
Identify common errors, bugs and simulation issues — including typical clashes between Simple and Detailed HVAC modes and how to resolve them systematically.
